As some of you may know, I am obsessed with my city Rome, and this movie perfectly incorporates all the things I love about it, mostly regarding its people.
There is an amazing scene which takes place in an outdoor 'trattoria', there is a mix of food, people yelling and singing, all seen through Fellini's 'northener' perspective. The whole movie is the impression Rome had on him when he first moved to the capitol as a young adult.
This clip is a mix of some of the funniest scenes from the movie, the first one being from the oudoor restaurant. For those who speak Italian the clip will be more funny.
Last week I posted the simple recipe for Pasta with Tuna, and this week I will give you another simple and quick recipe involving seafood: Pasta with shrimp.

Here is what you need (for 2 people):

200 gr Linguine (Spaghetti will be ok as well)
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 1/2 tablespoon white wine
Some cherry tomatoes
Chopped Parsley
Half a pack of Shrimps

Put a pot of water to boil. When it is boiling throw in the pasta.
In a separate pan, let the garlic cook until golden with some olive oil
Add the chopped tomatoes and let cook for a couple of minutes.
Add the shrimps and let cook until pink. You should let them cook until they have a 'C' shape, if they start to cook into an 'O' shape, that means they are overcooking.
Add the white wine.

When pasta is ready, drain and add to the pan with the shrimps. Mix everything together on a low heat and add the parsley.
You can then drizzle a bit more olive oil and some hot pepper flakes if you want to make it a bit more spicy.

Buon Appetito!
A young couple is casually invited to eat in the house of a family which supports the Monarchy, on the night of the Referendum of the Italian Republic.
Everyone is seated and the food is being served, we see the royals serve themselves one olive while the young couple fills their plate with 'pasticcio'. As soon as the results are announced, with the fall of the Monarchy and the rise of the Republic, the hosts lose their appetite and leave the couple alone at the table.
Alberto Sordi turns towards Lea Massari and asks: 'What should we do? Should we leave?', and she answers: 'Let's eat first and then we leave!'
The waiter walks in with a bottle of champagne and the couple eats on the notes of Mameli's Fratelli D'Italia.
This is a great moviw and a fun way to see Italy's history, everyone should watch it, here is the clip of the famous dining scene:
Most people will always have a can of tuna and a pack of pasta (Italians will for sure) sitting in their pantry so this should be easy for everyone.
While I usually use Tuna to make this dish, this time I didn't have a can of tuna but I had a beautiful box of Mackerel I had brought back from Italy a while ago. This works just as well, if not better.
The thing I love about this pasta dish is that you cook the sauce while the past is cooking, meaning that it all takes about 5 minutes!

Here is this simple recipe:

(for 2 people)
1 clove garlic
some cherry tomatoes
1 can tuna
200 grams of pasta (I prefer a shorter shape)

-Boil a pot of water
-Chop up the garlic and let cook until golden
-Add the cherry tomatoes (cut in half) and the can of tuna (drained)

-You can add a drop of white wine to the sauce

There are many other ways you can vary this recipe, here are just a few things you could add if you like or have them sitting around:

Capers
Black olives
Parsley
Lemon Grind

Buon Appetito!
Directed by De Sica in 1954, the movie is composed of 6 different episodes. In this episode which is called Pizze a Credito Sophia Loren and her husband have a stall were they sell 'pizze a credito', meaning you could eat right away and pay when you had the money "mangi subito e paghi tra otto giorni'.
I love this scene, I love Naples, and I love Sophie Loren!
I have also started going to a gym that is right next to an amazing fruit and vegetable shop, so when I finish my workout I can't resist coming back home with bags full of fruit and vegetables. One of the things this shop has that I hadn't really noticed anywhere else is Swiss Chard. So I decided to combine the two.
Since the Tuna is best left simple, I decided to add something to the Chard: cherry tomatoes, capers,
and black olives.

For the Swiss Chard:

1 clove of garlic
10 tomatoes
tablespoon of capers
tablespoon of pitted black olives

- Cut the garlic in small pieces and let cook in a small pot until golden
- Add the chard (sliced into pieces)
- add some white wine to make it more wet and tasty
- When the chard starts cooking down, add the tomatoes, capers and olives
- Stir and let cook

In the meantime cook the tuna in a pan (with some olive oil) for about 1 minute on each side. When ready put it on top of the chard and enjoy!
It's the story of the 'mondine' who travel North towards the rice plantations in the Po Valley.
The word 'riso' in Italian means both rice and laughter, and within the movie has both meanings: bitter rice and bitter laughter.
There isn't much food in the movie apart from large quantities of rice, this is one of my favorite scenes where Silvana Mangano and Vittorio Gassman dance the boogie-woogie.
I had no idea what to do with the Squash until I remembered my mother often makes a pasta dish with Squash as the main ingredient for the sauce. So I phoned her up asked for the recipe and added just a couple variations.

Here is the recipe (for 2 people):

200 gr pasta (short shape is preferred)
1 small squash, peeled and cut into small cubes
oil and salt
fresh goat cheese
fresh basil

Turn on the oven to about 200-230c
Place the cut peaces of Squash on a baking sheet, drizzle oil, salt and pepper on top, and mix them around using your hands. Leave the squash to cook until the outside is brown and inside is soft, turning the pieces over at least once.
In the meantime, bring a pot of water to the boil and throw the pasta in
Put the cheese, basil and squash in a bowl, throw the pasta in with a bit of its cooking water (remember to save some to make the sauce creamy!)
Mix all together

It is better to use a softer cheese because it will melt and make the sauce more creamy, I made the mistake of using one that was a bit too hard, but it still turned out delicious!
If you think the pasta turns out too sweet, you can add some hot pepper to give it an extra punch.

Enjoy!
Shot mostly at the Lido di Ostia, its the story about a crowd of people from Rome who decide to spend their one day of holiday at the beach. Its a comedy and a good opportunity to dream about how different the 'beach experience' used to be compared to how it is today. My favourite scene is the family lunch at the beach because although some things have changed, Italians still love and continue to eat a big lunch at the beach. Even if it's 40 degrees outside, you can't say no to a plate of pasta.

I would try and eat anything, and that includes liver and all the other innards.

Most people think they are gross and don't want to be anywhere near them, but I love them.

So I had some liver in my fridge and decided to cook it without looking at a recipe, just making it up along the way. And so I came up with Liver a la Sophie. It's quite simple and might even exist already, but I like to believe it's my personal one.

So here is what you will need:

200 gr Chicken livers

1/2 white onion

1 tablespoon butter

3 tablespoons dry white wine

salt and pepper

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

fresh mint leaves

Put some olive oil in a pan and let the onions cook until golden.

Then add the liver and let cook for a couple of minutes.

Add the butter, and as soon as it has melted add the wine.

Let cook until they loose that pink colour on the inside.

Add some mint leaves and the lemon juice towards the end.

Add some mint leaves for garnish if you want to make it look pretty!

My personal touch was the mint and the lemon, I don't think I've ever had it with those 2 ingredients before. Enjoy!

I have been very busy working and trying to finish my final year of university by writing a good dissertation. Of course my dissertation is going to be about food, and more specifically about food in three different periods of Italian cinema. I want to explore how the food in these movies represents Italian culture at the time. I have been watching a lot of great movies, and thought I might share a clip each time I watch a new one.

The last movie I saw is Campo de' Fiori by Mario Bonnard, released in 1943. The main actor is Aldo Fabrizi (brother of Sora Lella), who plays a pescivendolo (fish monger) in Rome's market Campo de' Fiori. Fabrizi was know for his passion of food in real life, and there are a few good food scenes in the movie. At the start of the film he gives a customer a recipe for fish so she can impress her guests at the table, and later on he prepares a fish soup to try and impress the woman he is infatuated with. It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but it entertained me! I am looking forward to watching lots more movies, posting many clips, and hopefully write an amazing dissertation.

My friend Chris usually puts it in his famous Ginger Soup, but this summer, during my family vacation in the Greek island of Paros, I tried a different version of it. The version I had in a small Taverna in Paros, was Okra with Tomatoes. I decided to try it myself and found a good recipe for it in an old Greek cookbook my mother gave me when I moved to London, called Greek Cooking by Lesley Mackley. I love Greek food because it is so simple but so tasty, and this Okra recipe was really easy and quick, so here it is (I changed it a bit):

Okra
Olive oil
Chopped Onion (She says to add a leek and a clove of garlic, but I only used onion)
Tomatoes (Chopped in small pieces)
Tablespoon of Lemon
Salt and Pepper
A pinch of Sugar

First, cut the stalks off the Okra carefully without piercing the pods.
In a large pan, heat some Olive oil, and then add the onions until gold.
Add the Okra and let cook for about 5 minutes, covering pan with a lid.

Now add the chopped tomatoes, (I added some passata as well as the chopped tomatoes to make it a bit saucier), sugar and lemon.
Let cook until sauce is reduced and Okra is tender.
Sprinke some salt and pepper and it's read to eat!

I love it a side dish with meat, enjoy!

I was lucky enough to attend this years Salone del Gusto in Torino, thanks to my mother who let me tag along with her and help out with the work.
The salone happens every two years, and this was actually my third time at the Salone, and loved it! This was the first year that the Salone and Terra Madre were both under the same roof, so I got to taste some amazing food from all over the world, not only Italy. Thought I would share some of my favourite pictures from the trip:
In Spain, I loved the Pan y Tomate (literally bread with tomatoes), but it was when I traveled to Istanbul that I found my perfect breakfast: Turkish Breakfast.
In Italy, it is extremely rare for people to eat a big breakfast, and it usually consists of a cornetto and cappuccino, rarely do people make a more 'salty' choice.
Turkish breakfast usually consists of: cheese (feta, or any kind you prefer), olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, some kind of cold-cut meat, and an egg. I usually have mine without the meat, and with a boiled egg, in an attempt to make it healthier; all comes with a piece of bread (I choose brown).
I'm sure any Italian would be horrified to know that I like to have cucumbers and olives for breakfast, but I dont care, it still remains my favourite breakfast!
Vietnamese Sandwiches in LondonI had heard people talking about Vietnamese sandwiches, and had tried it a couple of times and I must say I wasn't crazy about it. That is until Anissa took me to a small Vietnamese place near her flat in Old Street. These sandwiches are actually called Banh Mi, and what makes the ones at Keu so delicious is the bread: Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Their classic Banh Mi is composed of baguette filled with spiced pork belly, ham terrine and chicken liver pate, and is amazing. I also tried some of the one stuffed with the spicy roast duck. This is the perfect place for a quick meal, and if you are not hungry (shame on you), you can have a glass of their freshly squeezed orange juice or their delicious Vietnamese coffee.
Yes, she has been spending her days on London's only book barge, that sails across London selling books to happy people. This book barge is the living proof that there still are some people out there who love a good bound paper book, and not the Ipad or Iphone version. The barge is a beautiful 1920's art deco one, but the best part is the barge's crew. Three friends run the boat, with the captain being a man named Paddy. There are two lovely cats that make their way through the books and are always up for a belly rub. Most of the books are second-hand ones, some are very rare and all prices are extremely reasonable. Since they only like to stay in one place for two weeks, you can find out where they are going to be moving next through their Twitter account. If it's a nice day they will also have live music on the top of the barge. I would say that making a visit to Word on the Water on a sunny day is one of the most fun experiences i have had in London.
Last saturday I met some friends in Hackney at Broadway market for lunch. It took quite a while to get there with the bus, but was worth it. It takes place on a little road that is closed to traffic on Saturdays and is full of food stalls. There is a burger stand, vegan stand, ghanian food, indian food, and I spotted quite a few dessert stands with huge slices of cake (one only sold different kinds of cheescakes!).
There are some stalls that sell clothes and just a 2 minute walk from the market is Regents canal where you can sit and eat whatever you picked-up for lunch, and enjoy the music that comes from the barges.
They organize amazing walks and tours in 15 cities worldwide. The people giving the tours really know what they are talking about, always make it fun, and that's why it has been so successful. I have been going on their tours and taking photographs for their website, it's been really fun and have also learnt a lot about the city I'm living in. Here are some pictures I took on a few walks around London, enjoy!
The other day I was in Waitrose and made a huge discovery: Romanesco Broccoli! This is one of my absolute favorite vegetables, it has a very bright, light green color and is almost cone-shaped. It has a very creamy and nutty taste compared to normal broccoli, and in Italy is used for a lot of different recipes. I decided to make pasta with broccoli and sausage.
Here is the recipe: (Didn't really follow one from a book)

- Pasta
- Garlic
- Sausage
- Romanesco Broccoli
- Olive oil
- Hot pepper
- Parmigiano (Pecorino Romano would be better, and they do sell it at Waitrose, I saw it!)

Cut the Broccoli in pieces, cutting off the tough parts
Cut the Sausage in small pieces

In a pan, let some oil, garlic and hot pepper heat.
When the Garlic starts to turn golden, toss in the sausage.

When sausage starts turning slightly brown, add the pieces of broccoli.
Put a lid ont he pan, and let cook. If it looks dry you can add some water, or I sometimes like to add some white wine.

In the meantime, let the pasta cook in boiling water.

When broccoli is cooked, toss pasta in the pan and mix all together, if needed you can add some more olive oil, and later grate some cheese.

Apparently, it's supposed to be one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in London, and after taking a walk through it with a friend the other day, I can confirm that it is. It's called 'village', because it actually used to be a small town a long long time ago, and today, even though it's ten minutes from Archway station, it actually still feels like one. Right next to Highgate Village is Kenwood House, a beautiful 17th century estate, surrounded by amazing land and garden. The rooms inside the house are beautifully decorated and there are quite a few impressive art pieces, including a self-portrait by Rembrandt, which was my personal favorite. The gardens around the house made it feel like I was out in the countryside and for an afternoon made me forget I was actually within the city of London. There is a gazebo in the house's gardens from which you can see a breathtaking view of London's skyline. We found a cute Italian bakery (there are so many cute shops and bakeries) on the high street and had a short apple cake stop. The whole day was beautiful and with a 10 minute bus ride I was able to have a breath of fresh air and forget about London's chaos.
She hosted this beautiful Emirati-inspired meal at her lovely home and I was so fortunate to be able to help. I had never really assisted anyone preparing and cooking food from this part of the world and was completely amazed by the amount, beauty and smell of al the spices. The menu started off with two different kinds of kofthas, one of fish and one of meat. The main was a baby goat that we let marinate in a mixture of spices and rose water, accompanied by a beautiful biryani rice. On the side, there was a simple green salad dressed with quite a lot of mint, wich really refreshed everything, delicious.
The dessert was a saffron milk pudding with some amazing pistachios (hand-peeled by me). It was truly amazing to be able to help Anissa prepare this meal, and really learnt a lot in just one meal, cant wait for the next one!
(Pictures of the baby goat may be disturbing to some)
This weekend I made my way for the first time to Madrid. I really didn't know what to expect but I can say that I fell in love with this amazing city. One of the things I was excited about was the food of course, and the famous Spanish Tapas. The weather was amazing, sunny and hot. I found the 'Madrilenos' to be amazing people, they are extremely friendly and really made an effort to understand my embarrassing efforts to speak Spanish. While walking around the city I found a few "Museo del Jamon', which literally means 'Ham Museum'; this was my paradise. An entire store selling exclusively pork products, and sandwiches stuffed with any kind of ham you could possibly imagine.
I loved the Spanish lifestyle, people were so relaxed during the day, and so active at night, it was really amazing. Pan y Tomate for breakfast, Jamon sandwich for lunch, Patatas Bravas for dinner, and the warmth of the sun on my face made this weekend a truly memorable one. I will definitely make my way back to Madrid!
I am not a vinyl collector, but I always love looking at them, and this is the place for vinyl lovers, and was a lovely discovery to make while hiding from the rain. The first thing I noticed when walking inside is the owner, an extremely charismatic and friendly man who started talking to me as if he had known me for years. The store itself is a real treat, packed with records that span entire genres and decades, I can easily see how someone could end up spending hours in there, chatting with the owner and looking at records. It's very easy to get to and only minutes away from Islington.
